Hong Kong, a port city, witnessed the boom of the boat-building industry in the mid-19th century. However, as Hong Kong society transformed, the century-old industry met with many modern challenges and is now waning. Grand Chinese junks faded away, while the skillful craftsmen behind those hand-made wooden boats are aging and facing a lack of successors to carry on their work, leading to the decline of their craft and loss of craftsmanship spirit. Through the collections at HKMM, our project aims to bring visitors’ attention to maritime labor, specifically the boat builders. With their spirit of craftsmanship as the starting point, we encourage visitors to combine imagination with experience, slow down and revisit our maritime history.
